Leeds United put on a superb performance in their Premier League opener on Monday, beating Newcastle United 4-1 at Elland Road to maintain their unbeaten start to the league campaign and get into third place. A fierce first-half was taken over by Daniel Farke’s men as they scored two goals in two minutes. Ao Tanaka got the first of his two goals in the game when he beat defenders from Lewis Miley and Sean Steur with a deflection and sent his shot into the top corner.
Leeds was soon on target with a second goal. James Justin’s cross had his name on it as he was met by the header that went astray and found the bottom corner for Jayden Bogle, giving Newcastle a tough game ahead. Leeds’ intensity and pressure were a challenge for the visitors. Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek was repeatedly challenged, making some vital saves to hold off the gap widening further. The third came just before half time for Leeds.
Gabriel Gudmundsson found the back of the net from an excellent low finish by a dominant striker, who had enough time and space to beat Sven Botman and then finish into the far corner. The hosts dominated the game after the break and missed a few chances before scoring their fourth in the 59th minute. Ethan Ampadu’s long throw was only just wide, but Okafor scored a big half volley into the far corner. Newcastle made some substitutions from the bench to try to make a comeback, but Leeds were in control and had few opportunities to pressure the Newcastle defence.
This late consolation was a consolation to Newcastle but had no effect with Bazoumana Toure able to get it off in the 89th minute. Leeds lifted their unbeaten streak and recorded their first defeat of the season against Newcastle, with the latter’s impressive return to the Premier League, in the win.
